I made the low res base in Maya. The total poly count is 11,062. I also UV mapped him in maya. Once I was finished UV'ing him, I exported him as an OBJ so I could manipulate him in Zbrush. In zbrush I smoothed him and worked on all the finer details. Muscles, veins, hairs, skin, etc. Once finished in Zbrush, I threw both the low res and high res models back into maya and rendered them in Mental Ray.
